I send my Condolences to the family. Mr Johnson was a humbly person I had the pleasure of meeting as a student at West Tech. I didn’t ride the elevator much but I would speak to him daily. God bless

To the family, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m a 1984 West Tech graduate and I didn’t know Horace except to say hello in passing but one day I learned what a great person he was. In the first decade or so of forced busing there was a lot of racial tension, racial divide, and racial violence. I was a white kid going to a school that had become predominantly African-American. I would say the student population at West Tech was roughly 60 to 70% African-American at the time and for the most part people get along. But one day as I walked by myself out of the cafeteria which was in the basement, and headed to the boys room with a cigarette in my mouth to go smoke it in one of the stalls, someone slammed me into the concrete wall from behind and when I turned around there were probably 25 to 35 kids, most or all of them black, boys and girls running at me, punching me, kicking me, swinging sticks and poles at me….I was a fighter back then but this was a situation where I had to just cover up to protect my vital spots….i was able to land a few punches when they got tired from pummeling me but that only made it worse….after that they came at me even more viscously until out of nowhere comes Horace and he literally puts himself in between me and the attackers and covered me up with his body and by doing so got hit a few times himself but he stood his ground and eventually was able to run off the attackers and assist me in getting to the principal’s office safely to eventually get medical help. I’m pretty sure I said thank you to him but I don’t think he ever got the proper recognition he deserved for his act of valor that day. What he did for me took a lot of courage and I’m very thankful for that and I just wanted to share with everyone. Horace was a great guy in my book and may god bless his soul!
