Mr. Irwing Dominic

Irwing Dominic was born on August 12, 1930 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to Erwin Dominic and Jessie Mae (Hall); He was the oldest of 14 children with seven living into adulthood.  Three have preceded him in death.  On June 14, 1956 he married his soul mate Catherine V. Chapman and to this union seven children were born. His eldest son, Darry preceded him in death.

Irwing Dominic completed elementary school in South Carolina, and Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, New York. It was in 1948 after High School graduation, when he joined the United States Air Force. It was during this period that he converted from Baptist to Catholicism.  Besides the United States, Dominic served tours of duty in Guam, Korea, Japan, Greenland, Thailand, and Spain. His last tour before retiring in 1974 was at Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters in Electronic Intelligence.

Dominic was a 1978 Graduate of Bellevue University in Bellevue, Nebraska with a BA in Psychology.  He also worked toward his Masters Degree at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.

His Postal Service career began as a mail-handler in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1974. In 1979 he was promoted to Assistant Training and Development Specialist. In 1983 he accepted the position Manager of Postal Employment and Development which relocated him to Cleveland, OH.  Catherine and their three younger children join him in 1984. After a few years Dominic transferred to Long Island, NY in 1986 in the same capacity to be close to his Mom and other family members. His last postal move was to Akron, OH as the Manager of Employment and Training where he served from 1988 until his retirement in 2001.

Following 52 years of government service he still hadn’t done enough! Dominic decided to fulfill a lifetime dream of becoming a teacher. He taught in the Cleveland Municipal Schools System and Catholic Schools (St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Francis) for almost five years.

Dominic has been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1976, 3rd and 4th degrees. He was a member of St. Agnes+Our Lady of Fatima Parish since 2000. Being a member of the parish, he was very active in several parish groups until his stroke in April 2009: The Wisdom Council, Men’s Group, The Advisory Council, a counselor for the Parish Youth Group, Lector, RCIA, and also the Adult and Men’s Choir.

Dominic received outstanding achievement awards in the U.S. Air Force to include: Meritorious Service, National Service, and the Korean Service Metals. Other awards included: United States Postal Service Master Humanitarianism Philanthropist Award, Postal Service Image of Excellence Award, Trainer of Excellence Award, St. Agnes+Our Lady of Fatima Parish the KUJENCA.  These are just a few of the many awards Dominic received from his many years of Public and Government Service.

One of the greatest attributes of Dominic was his willingness to share.  Share his time, knowledge, his love of traveling visiting his relatives and friends; but most of all his love of cooking.  He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends no matter what the menu was or the cost.  No matter where he was, he never met a stranger and was always willing to engage in conversation no matter what the subject was!  His most teachable moments were with his grandchildren whom he loved, loving on and spending time with. When he wasn’t talking your ear off, he loved to read the newspaper and drink coffee out on his deck which he would say was his little slice of heaven’s solitude. A favorite quote he loved to say: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope to have not a single bit of talent left, and could say to the Lord, “I used everything that you gave me”

Irwing leaves to mourn his lovely wife Catherine of 61+ years and their (Six) children:  Duane, Dwight (special friend Karen Bradley), Denice (Thomas) Johnson, Deirdre (Stacey) Thomas, Deland, and Damian.
